Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk nominated for South Bank Sky Arts Award

We've got some more great news to share!

We're thrilled to announce that our 2021 production RhineGold was nominated in the Opera category of The South Bank Sky Arts Awards 2022.

Birmingham Opera Company's five-star internationally acclaimed production RhineGold directed by Richard Willacy in tribute to Graham Vick was performed in Symphony Hall, as we exited lockdown, with volunteers and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by our Music Director, Alpesh Chauhan.

Birmingham Opera Company was awarded The South Bank Show Award for our 2002 production of Beethoven's only opera Fidelio.

The awards ceremony was broadcast at 8pm (CET) Wednesday 13th July on SkyArts.

In 2023, Birmingham Opera Company hosted the European Opera Directing Prize. Now the winning team, led by Lorenzo Ponte, returns to Birmingham to develop their new production of Smetana's "Two Widows", which will appear as part of the Smetana 200 Festival in the composer's hometownn of Litomyšl, before heading on to Prague and then Lviv National Opera, Ukraine.
