What's up European Opera Directing Prize European Opera Directing Prize - winners announced In summer 2023, Birmingham Opera Company welcomed a handful of the most exciting young creative teams from across Europe to its home city, as hosts of the 13th European Opera Directing Prize. The €25,000 prize was awarded by Camerata Nuova. The winners, from Milan, are: Lorenzo Ponte (Director), with Alice Benazzi (Set Design) and Guilia Rossena (Costume Design) The prize is enabling the team to develop their award-winning concept and create their new production of Smetana's Two Widows. The production, sung in English and engaging local volunteer performers alongside professional singers, will mark the bicentenary of Smetana’s birth as part of the Smetana 200 Festival in Litomyšl.
