These sessions will give you a taster for what singing in a chorus is like, in a low-stakes, friendly environment. You can come along to one, two or all three. New Brum Commissions We have three brand-new operas commissioned by Birmingham Opera Company exploring stories of absent fathers, the iconic music venue Mothers in Erdington and “What do you want to say that no one is hearing?” Our first work by composer Leon Clowes is inspired by Bertolt Brecht’s play Baal and delves into collective experiences of physical, emotional or spiritual loss of a father as well as experiences from those who have been an absent father themselves. The second work reminisces on the renowned Birmingham music venue Mothers. Composer Aidan Teplitzky focuses not only on the history of the Erdington venue which hosted names such as Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd, but also looks into the feelings and experiences we get from seeing live music and the importance of local live music venues. The third work by composer Romarna Campbell explores the question of “What do you want to say that no one is hearing?” Developed in with Brummies sharing their responses to the provocation, this work will use creative expression as the key to unlocking silenced voices. We would love your input in the development of these operas at The Opera Lab 3.0. These sessions include a singing and story-sharing session on the subject of Mothers music venue, discussion and music workshop on “What do you want to say that no one is hearing?” and conversation and soundscape creating workshop on Absent Fathers.
