THE OPERA LAB 4.0

THE OPERA LAB 4.0 IS BACK...

Every year we hold an Opera Lab in which artists collaborate to research & develop work. Out of these sessions come new commissions, programming and artist development opportunities.

Later this month, The Opera Lab 4.0 returns!

THIS YEAR'S EXPERIMENTS

  • The collaboration continues with composer Cassie Kinoshi and librettist lydia luke as they test out ideas following their 2023 Brum Commission the heart must weather what the heart was made to take

  • The development of a brand new work from opera singer/writer Themba Mvula and composer/producer Danni Skerritt (AKA DJ Dirty Freud) continues. The next episode will premiere at The Opera Station in December.

  • BOC Music Director Alpesh Chauhan OBE and internationally renowned Soprano Ingela Brimberg will be working through Arnold Schoenberg’s Erwartung which they will perform later in the year at BOZAR (Brussels' celebrated Centre for Fine Arts).

There is also the chance for you to get involved! Whether you’re interested in singing, acting, music learning, exchanging and hearing stories, there are opportunities to get involved. How come? We make opportunities for volunteers in Birmingham to work alongside artists to shape our work at all stages.

COME & SING

Our FREE Come & Sing sessions are made for everyone - whether you're a seasoned singer, a casual karaoke enthusiast or brand-new to the game, come along and give singing a go! These sessions will give you a taster for what singing in a chorus is like in a low-stakes, friendly environment. You can come along to just one session, or both.

What's the deal?

Leading the sessions will be our fantastic Chorus Director Mariana Rosas supported by professional opera singers who will get us all singing. There’s no previous experience necessary (must be aged 16+), there is no cost to taking part and travel expenses, up to £5.50, are reimbursed for each session you attend. We can’t wait to meet you!

When?

  • Friday 13th November, 6:30PM - 9:30PM at The Crescent Theatre, Sheepcote St, Birmingham B16 8AE

  • Sunday 15th November, 1:30PM - 5:30PM at Fabric Studios at Birmingham Hippodrome, Entrance on Thorp St, Birmingham B5 4TB
