LAZARUS - A new opera for Birmingham and the world

Birmingham Opera Company has commissioned a new opera, LAZARUS, that will have its world premiere in March 2018. The production will not only engage new audiences in Birmingham, but has the potential to change the way opera is performed around the world. You’re invited to come along on the journey and be a part of it.

Aren’t there enough opera's already?

This work plays to the strengths of volunteer participants as well as professional singers. Their experiences and creativity are going to make this opera relevant and engaging! It’s going to be a unique mix of local performers and opera professionals that create a world-class work together. Opera houses and festivals around the world will be able to use this work and the award-winning Birmingham Opera Company Participation Engagement Programme to engage their own audiences.

What’s it about?

We’re starting with the biblical “myth of Lazarus”. The opera will deal with moments of momentous personal change and explore what it means to be uprooted as a result of worldwide turmoil.

The Artistic Team

Our local participants will be working with an incredibly exciting artistic team of opera professionals.

Giorgio Battistelli is one of Italy’s foremost contemporary composers. He regularly premieres his work in the most celebrated opera houses such as the La Scala, Milan.

Sarah Woods who has written the libretto for Lazarus has experience across all media and is particularly interested in social issues. Her work has been produced by companies such as Royal Shakespeare Company and the BBC.

The world premiere in Birmingham will be directed by our artistic director Graham Vick CBE, one of the world’s leading opera directors. He has a strong, local national and international reputation for re-directing the path of opera in the 21st century.

They will be joined by the young and incredibly talented conductor Jonathon Heyward.

You might have already experienced some of Battistelli’s music at our flashmob performance in April at Birmingham New Street Station.

The vocal score will be delivered in November 2017 and our local volunteer participants will start rehearsing soon after.
