Volunteer Engagement Programme

Imagine what Gareth Malone does with amateurs with The Choir on TV and multiply that by a hundred”

Magazine 2014

We believe everyone can succeed. That’s why everyone is invited to join our Volunteer Engagement Programme for free and without an audition. You can help keep it that way.

Picture1The training equips our participants with the key performance skills and confidence to perform alongside industry professionals in our large-scale productions. They will receive training by Ron Howell (Choreographer) and Jon Laird (Chorus Master) and be mentored emerging artists.

You can help us reach potential participants that would otherwise not consider getting involved with opera and help facilitate 20 free targeted workshops in partnership with artistic, social and educational organisations across all 10 Districts of Birmingham. All participants are invited to join the second phase of training, or come along to one of the performances.

The programme produces fantastic artistic, social and personal results:

“Socially, being part of a chorus of such open minded and passionate people has inspired me to meet new people through singing. The social cohesion Birmingham Opera drives is absolutely unique.” Participant aged 25, postcode B14 (2016)

ICE BREAK-BOC-2015-0248Following last year’s Dido n’ Aneas programme 81% felt better or healthier, 89% felt happier, 83% became more confident, 61% developed a more active social life, 82% learnt from and about people who have different backgrounds to them, 18% decided to start some training and 91% were encouraged to try something new.

Working with locals also creates better opera. Taking opera out of its ghetto allows it to be relevant and engaging to new and old audiences alike.

We need your help to support this project financially. If you’d like to keep this project open and accessible, please consider making a one-off donation or setting up a monthly donation via Virgin Money Giving
