ARTSFEST 2008

Verdi’s OTHELLO

5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 17, 19 December at 7.15pm

Argyle Works, Great Barr Street, Birmingham B9 4EX

The African Othello thinks he’s made it – Venice’s most famous general, a hero, sent out to lead the forces whenever terror threatens. Praised by politicians and people alike – who could ask for more? And then he takes a young white wife….

Identity brings with it a sense of belonging – to the group, to the family, to society. For those who would belong, the process of assimilation is profound; it’s not just acting the part, it’s being it.

But such a hard won position can all too easily be undermined. Seeds of doubt, fed by half lies, eat at the foundations on which a whole persona, a whole society, is built. Fear takes hold and the veneer begins to peel… who do you think you are?

Shakespeare’s famous tragedy inspired music of extraordinary ferocity, violence and beauty from opera’s most popular composer, Giuseppe Verdi.  An outstanding cast, led by Ronald Samm, opera’s first ever black Othello, will be joined by a company of more than 250 actors, singers and dancers who live and work in Birmingham with Artistic Director, Graham Vick, at the helm. Stephen Barlow conducts the Birmingham Opera Company Orchestra and Chorus.

Shoes may not be worn in the performance space – socks will be available. Othello will be a ‘walkabout’ production so if you have limited mobility please call 0121 246 6644 for more details. 4 wheelchair spaces have been reserved for each performance and accessible toilets and bar will be at ground floor level.
